さらっと見かけて結構驚いた話。世界から「ヴ」が消える、とな？

世界から「ヴ」が消える・・・？
話の元になったのはこちらの記事ですね。
「世界から『ヴ』が消える」という刺激的なタイトル。これがコミュニティを伝搬する中で「ヴという表記がなくなる」という話に変わって伝わってきました。
実際には外務省主導で海外の国名表記のうち、最後2つ残っていた「ヴ」を含む国名が修正されてヴを含む国名がなくなるそうです。
「セントクリストファー・ネー『ヴ』ィス」というカリブ海の国の名前が「セントクリストファー・ネービス」に、そして「カーボ『ヴ』ェルデ」というアフリカにある島国が「カーボベルデ」に変わる。これで日本語の国名からは『ヴ』がなくなるのだという。
こういった調整は過去も「ヴェトナム」「ボリヴィア」が「ベトナム」「ボリビア」に改まったり、で行われていたことだそうです。そういえば昔はヴェトナムだったかな・・・？

これでふと思ったのが、ちょうど前の記事の話、マリオットグループのMarriott Bonvoy。
Bonvoy、という聞きなれない単語もそうですが、これを日本語表記している解説サイトなどでは、「マリオットボンヴォイ」と書いている所が多かったです。
もし・・・ほんとに日本語から「ヴ」が消えたら・・・

なんとかホイホイみたいですね。
「ヴ」が無くなるのは「改正在外公館名称位置給与法」
冒頭のNHKのニュースに記載されていますが、今回の「ヴ」が無くなる話の大元は「改正在外公館名称位置給与法」という法律です。
Wikipediaに記載がある通り、これが直近の改定でヴを使う2か所の名称、セントクリストファー・ネーヴィスとカーボヴェルデがそれぞれ「セントクリストファー・ネイビス」と「カーボベルデ」に変更になりました。
2019年（平成31年）の改正により、名称変更の宣言を受けてスワジランドから「エスワティニ」へ変更。また、セントクリストファー・ネーヴィスとカーボヴェルデをそれぞれ「セントクリストファー・ネイビス」と「カーボベルデ」に変更し、「ヴ」は使用されないこととなった[6][7]。

それよりも・・・スワジランドがエスワティニに変更になる方がスゴイ変わりようだと思いますが・・ｗ
起源を調べてみると色々面白いです。
正式名称は英語で、Kingdom of Eswatini（キングダム・オブ・エスワティーニ）。通称、Eswatini。国民・形容詞とも Swazi と表記。1968年に独立したがイギリス領時代の国名を変更せずそのまま継続した経緯があった。[2]
もともとイギリス領だったこの国、スワジ（Swazi）は国民を意味する言葉だそうで、イギリスから独立した際にスワジランド、スワジ人の国、と名称を決めました。
ところがスワジは現地語ながらランド(Land)が英語なので、国名としてふさわしくない、という議論があり、そこから遂に国王が国名変更の英断を下して「エスワティニ」、スワジ人の場所、という国名に変えたそうです。
これはこれで面白いですね。
