Tern Surgeのステムを30mm伸ばしたら車速を上げやすくなったかも
ダイエット目的で自転車こいでるのでそれほどスピードを追求してるわけでもないのですが、Tern Surgeのステムを純正90mmから120mmのものに交換しました。そして朝のライドで試してみたら・・・なんか速度を上げるのがちょっと楽になったような・・・。
純正ステムを120mmのものに交換
Tern Surgeの純正ステムは90mm±6°です。
僕のはサイズ50なので90mmですね。
乗っているときに前傾姿勢を強めようとするとちょっと窮屈な感じが前からしていたので、どこかでステムを変えようかなぁ・・・とは思っていました。そんなときにこういう記事も見て「あ、じゃぁ変えよう」と思い立ったわけです。
こちらの事例では120mm±17°でステムを水平にする、という話のようですが、後で結局前傾姿勢が強すぎて10°に入れ替えられたようで、だったらまず純正の長さを伸ばすだけにしようかなぁ・・・と。
こちらのブログでも紹介されているシマノプロの120mm±6°が、たまたまAmazonで品切れでした。17°だと余裕で在庫あるのですが・・・。
で、安めで120mmになってるそこそこのメーカーのものを物色していると・・・Giantでこんな長可変のステムが見つかりました。
バー側のクランプにスペーサーがついていて、120mmか105mmかを選択できる、というもの。それで120/105mm±8°だそうです。とりあえずすぐに試したかったのでこれをゲット。
届いてから気づいたのですが・・・よく見ると手元側の固定ナットが1本止めなんですね、これ・・・。ちょっとそこは不安・・・（使ってみると全く問題なかったです）。
朝のライドで試乗
さていつもの朝のライドで試乗してみました。まぁ組み付けたときに一度自宅周辺をくるっと回ったり坂登ったりしてるのですが・・・長い時間乗ってみてどうか、というところです。
まずまたがってみてすぐ思ったのが、ハンドルポジションが3センチ前になっただけなのですが、いきなり大きな自転車に乗ってる感じになったこと。ゴツい感じ、とでもいうのでしょうか。ちょっと意外な感じでした。
駒沢公園のサイクリングコースを走っているときに思ったのが胸と腕のあたりのスペースがすごく余裕があること。その分、肘を体につけて脇を締める、みたいな体勢がちょっとゆるい感じになりました。脇を締めきれない、という感じ？
駒沢公園のコースは半周が下りで半周が緩やかな上りなのですが、この上りのところで変化に気づきました。基本上りはなるべくケイデンスをあげて速度を意識しているのですが、いつもなかなか届かないスピードがあっさり出る！加速しやすくなった感じです。
深めの前傾姿勢が取りやすくなっているのもあり、空気抵抗を下げやすくなったんだと思います。上半身に余裕ができたことで下半身も力を入れやすく・・・とかも思いましたが、それってそんな急に変わるものでもないはずなので、やはり空力的なところの改善かと。
とはいえ、ポジション改善のためのステム交換がこれだけ速度に影響してくるとは思っていなかったので驚きでした。
